A new way to enjoy Edo-era ukiyo-e in modern tourism

When it comes to sightseeing in Japan, historic sites like Sensoji Temple and Kyoto’s Gion district are popular.

However, these same locations are also depicted in numerous ukiyo-e prints.

For example, bridges over the Sumida River and Nihonbashi Bridge were special sights to Edo-period residents, and ukiyo-e artists captured them in their works.

However, connecting ukiyo-e prints with actual locations can be surprisingly difficult for modern tourists.

The new tourism app “Ukiyo-e Map” solves this challenge.

What is Ukiyo-e Map? (Map app for sightseeing around Ukiyo-e)

Ukiyo-e Map is a free app that lets you explore the sights depicted in ukiyo-e prints on a map.
Enjoy strolling around the city while viewing ukiyo-e prints from the Edo and Meiji periods on your smartphone and comparing them with modern-day cityscapes.

Sensoji Temple, the Sumida River, Nihonbashi Bridge

Kyoto’s Gion, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and Kinkaku-ji Temple

Through ukiyo-e prints, you can explore popular tourist spots such as these, overlaying the “scenery of the time” with the “present-day scenery.”

👉 This app offers a new city walking experience not only for tourists but also for history buffs and art fans.す。

Why did we create the Ukiyo-e Tourism App?

It all started with a small question I had while visiting a tourist spot.

“Isn’t this scenery also depicted in ukiyo-e?”

When I looked into it, I found that there were indeed many ukiyo-e prints, but there was no easy way to compare them when I was in the area.

So I thought, “If there was an app that connected ukiyo-e prints with tourist spots on a map, wouldn’t traveling be more enjoyable?” and so I developed Ukiyo-e Map.
